Be the Change Symposium

Schedule: December 5 – Day Two

9:00 – 5:00 pm        Program

Please join us in what we think will be a productive push for radical, collective action to create equity in the information profession: Be the Change, December 4-6, 2019 at Washington University in St. Louis.

What
Be the Change is a two-day, in-person event designed to inspire collective action to advance our shared goal of creating anti-racist, anti-oppressive systemic change in our profession. It is organized by a group of colleagues who are committed to this work and represent a variety of backgrounds, organizations, and lived identities.

While we reject oppression in all its forms, in this work we adopt the Government Alliance on Race and Equity’s rationale for leading with an explicitly anti-racism framework: https://www.racialequityalliance.org/about/our-approach/race/

Why
Many of our professional organizations (associations, individual libraries, and affiliates) are involved with EDI work, though often pursuing goals independently. Although the efforts are intense and commitment is present, without analyzing root causes and coordinating our work, we are unlikely to identify and change the underlying systems causing the problems we are trying to solve.

At Be the Change we will seek root causes and use a collective action framework to develop a large-scale initiative focused on systemic change.

Who
Information professionals (practitioners, influencers, thought leaders, and activists) committed to leading the profession toward anti-racist, systemic change. We’re inviting you because we are inspired by your work and want to build on that work in collective community with you. That being said, we’re constantly looking to expand this collective outward to others with a similar vision and commitment to anti-racism: if you have suggestions of other colleagues we should reach out to, please let us know.

How
We will use a collective action framework based on Collective Impact (see especially The Five Conditions of Collective Success) to unite the work of stakeholders across the whole system toward shared and measurable goals for systemic change. During this event we will focus on scoping the issues, developing a shared vision for change, agreeing on a process for collective action, identifying goals, and planning work within action groups.

We would love to have you join us for this upcoming event and, most importantly, for the work we’ll be doing afterward. Please respond here by Oct. 25, 2019 and let us know if you’ll be planning to join us. We are working to make funding available for those who need it, so please indicate on the registration form if you will need a sponsorship (registration, lodging, travel) or if you’d be able and willing to sponsor someone else.

This is important, difficult work. We look forward to striving to Be the Change in community with you.
